What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

GSTR-1 reports outward supplies, including sales invoice details. GSTR-3B summarises supplies, eligible input tax credit and tax payable. Regular taxpayers generally need both.

When are GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B due?

Standard monthly deadlines are the 11th of the following month for GSTR-1 and the 20th for GSTR-3B. Under QRMP, GSTR-1 is generally due on the 13th after the quarter, and GSTR-3B on the 22nd or 24th, depending on the State or Union Territory. Government extensions can change these dates.

Who can choose quarterly GST return filing under QRMP?

Eligible taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore in the current and preceding financial year can opt for QRMP, subject to scheme conditions. GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed quarterly, while tax payments remain monthly where payable.

Do I need to file a nil GST return if there are no sales?

Filing obligations may continue even without sales. A nil GSTR-3B requires no reportable supplies, no input tax credit claim and no applicable tax, interest or late-fee liability. Check the portal conditions before selecting nil filing.

Is GSTR-2B a return that I need to submit?

No. GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted input tax credit statement, rather than a return you submit. Review it against purchase records and applicable credit conditions before preparing your GST return.

Which GST forms apply to composition taxpayers?

Composition taxpayers use CMP-08 for the quarterly statement and payment, and GSTR-4 for the annual return. Confirm the applicable period and portal requirements for your registration.

Is GSTR-9 the same as monthly GST filing?

No. GSTR-9 is an annual return. It does not replace the applicable periodic returns. Annual filing requirements and exemptions should be checked for the relevant financial year.

What documents should I prepare for GST filing?

Prepare your GSTIN, sales and purchase registers, invoices, credit and debit notes, previous returns and payment details. Include export or reverse-charge records where relevant. The final checklist depends on your business and return type.
