NIL RETURNS AT A GLANCE
What is NIL GST filing?
A nil return records a period that meets the nil conditions of the applicable GST form. Corporate Mitras helps you review the requirement, organise the information and prepare for filing. A nil period is assessed from your records, rather than only from whether there were sales.
REVIEW BEFORE SELECTING NIL
Check nil eligibility for each return.
Sales & other supplies
Review all reportable supply records, including exempt and non-GST items.
Purchases & credit
Check purchase data, reverse-charge transactions and ITC claims or reversals.
Other liabilities

Nil GSTR-3B and nil GSTR-1 have different conditions. Review the relevant form and period before filing. Read the official GSTR-3B guidance.

Retain the acknowledgement
Keep the filed return status and reference for your records.
KEEP YOUR RECORDS CONSISTENT
Support for current and pending periods.
Tell Corporate Mitras whether you need assistance for one period or several unfiled months or quarters. The scope can include a review of the applicable form, the records available and any differences that need follow-up. A period with reportable data may require ordinary return preparation instead of a nil submission.
Keep a filing log for each GSTIN. Record the period, return type, submission reference and filed status. This makes future reviews easier and helps you distinguish a draft or enquiry from a completed return. Confirm the final deliverables and any work outside the quoted scope before starting.
ANSWERS BEFORE YOU START
NIL GST filing FAQs.
Answers on eligibility, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, due dates, SMS filing and late-fee considerations.
What is NIL GST filing?
NIL GST filing means submitting an applicable GST return for a period that meets that form’s nil conditions. It records a nil position; it does not close your GST registration. Eligibility must be checked separately for each form.
Source: official GST guidanceDo I need to file GST returns when there is no business activity?
Normal and casual taxpayers must file GSTR-3B even when there is no business in the period. GSTR-1 filing obligations also continue for applicable taxpayers. Confirm your registration category and filing frequency.
Source: official GST guidanceDoes having no sales mean I can file a nil GSTR-3B?
No. Nil GSTR-3B requires no reportable transactions or liabilities. Purchases, exempt or non-GST supplies, reverse-charge items, ITC claims or reversals, interest and late fees may prevent nil filing.
Source: official GST guidanceWhen can GSTR-1 be filed as nil?
Nil GSTR-1 requires no outward supplies for the relevant month or quarter, including reverse-charge outward supplies, zero-rated supplies and deemed exports. Check for advances, notes, amendments and other entries before selecting the nil option.
Source: official GST guidanceCan I claim input tax credit in a nil GSTR-3B?
No. An ITC claim or reversal means there is information to report and the return is not nil. Review purchase records and portal data before deciding how to file.
Source: official GST guidanceIs a nil return the same as a return with zero tax payable?
No. A return can have reportable transactions or credit adjustments even when the tax payable is zero. Use the appropriate reporting workflow instead of assuming that zero liability makes the return nil.
Source: official GST guidanceWhat are the usual nil GST return due dates?
Usual monthly dates are the 11th of the following month for GSTR-1 and the 20th for GSTR-3B. Under QRMP, GSTR-1 is generally due on the 13th after quarter-end and GSTR-3B on the 22nd or 24th, depending on the State or Union Territory. Extensions can change dates.
Source: official GST guidanceCan eligible small businesses file nil GST returns quarterly?
Eligible taxpayers under QRMP can file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly. Nil eligibility still needs checking for the entire quarter. Choosing quarterly filing is different from simply skipping monthly obligations.
Source: official GST guidanceHow can I file nil GSTR-3B online?
Log in to the GST Portal, select the return period and open the GSTR-3B preparation workflow. Use the nil option only if eligible, complete the applicable verification and retain the acknowledgement. Follow the current portal guidance.
Source: official GST guidanceCan I file a nil GST return through SMS?
Yes, the GST Portal supports eligible nil filing through SMS. Use the registered authorised-signatory mobile number and the prescribed form-specific message and confirmation procedure. Check eligibility and current instructions before using the facility.
Source: official GST guidanceHow do I confirm that my nil return was filed?
Check the Filed status on the GST Portal and retain the acknowledgement or ARN. In the SMS workflow, the final success message confirms filing; merely sending the initial message is not completion.
Source: official GST guidanceIs late nil GST filing free because no tax is payable?
No. A nil tax position does not automatically waive late fees. The applicable amount depends on the form, period and notifications or relief. Check the portal calculation and current rules before assuming a fee waiver.
Source: official GST guidanceCan I file a nil annual GST return just because monthly returns were nil?
Annual return applicability and nil conditions need a separate review. The GSTR-9 guide checks matters such as supplies, purchases, credits, refunds and other liabilities. Monthly nil filing alone does not settle every annual filing requirement.
Source: official GST guidanceWhat information should I prepare, and how much does assistance cost?
Share your GSTIN, registration category, filing period, previous return status and records showing whether there were transactions, credit adjustments or liabilities. Corporate Mitras can quote after reviewing the number of periods and the work needed. Confirm professional fees and applicable taxes before starting.
